The South African Government has recently passed the new
smoking legislation, as I am sure that you are well aware of. If not, basically
the new law states that: No smoking in 'partially enclosed' public places, such
as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas. Adults may
not smoke in a car when a passenger under 12 years is present. No person under
18 may be allowed into a designated smoking area. An increase in the fines for
smoking or allowing smoking in a non-smoking area.
South Africa is following a global trend to crackdown on smoking and follows a
world movement towards cleaner air. I think that the new law is going to be a
step in the right direction in achieving their goals. But in saying this, the
new Law is going to have a huge impact on the amount of cigarette litter
outside buildings, shopping centre and any public area. All smokers are now
going to be smoking outside and will be looking for places to throw their butts
away. If sufficient ashtrays are not in place, then the remaining option is to
